your Odyssey Sea Glass News, Issue #041 Hazardous Waste, Earthquake!
September 04, 2010
Hi,

Lin_and_David

Lin talks about hazardous beaches and a quake!

"Well, we're in the midst of a volunteer building project that has kept us busy but I did want to share with you a few things.

"A while ago when we were in Mancora, we decided to walk south on the beach to see what we could see. We went just past the pier and started walking. Not a whole lot of glass but I did find this pretty glass tile.

"At first I thought it was just another piece of the gazillion pieces of plastic we find or fiberglass. However, doing a scratch test for hardness, it did turn out to be glass, emitting nice glow when in the sunlight, although it appears to contain some other particles.

"We also decided a few weeks back to take a day and go check out Paita. Paita was the first port in Peru built back in the 1500s, with pirate raids and everything. We thought it would be a good place to check out.
What can I say: We went, we saw, we left.

"They did have some very neat old buildings but the town has the feeling of having been let go to the dogs, and the beach was a major disappointment. Walking the beach within the bay, I felt like we should have geared up in hazardous waste suits. I didn't want to touch anything. It was filthy; seems like all the boats in the harbor chuck their garbage overboard and I mean everything.  No sea glass. On the other side of town, it was all fill, so again, no sea glass.

"We tried to get to the town just north but apparently we got the wrong transportation and ended up back in Suillana (inland) instead of Colan. Because it was getting on in the day, we decided to just go home. We'll leave Colan for another time.

"We have realized that to properly check out the beaches down here we do need to rent a car or someone who has a car to get to the places we want to go. A lot of the places just don't have easy access. We did experience a 4.5 earthquake in the middle of the night on the 4th story of a hotel, which was exciting. ;-)

"So, with hurricane season upon us, what have you folks been finding in your neck of the woods?

"Happy hunting,"

Lin
