Odyssey Sea Glass Newsletter - Picturesque Junk - Exciting?
February 04, 2014
Hi,

I'm sure that most of us agree that what is junk to some people is picturesque to others. We see this a lot in art today, perhaps in large sculptures made of "junk" metal scraps or in tiny jewelry fashioned from watch parts.

For us, the beauty of junk is often found on beaches.

As we get the opportunity to travel on a variety of beaches, we have been able to take photos of picturesque junk that we've seen on beaches on the coasts of California, Washington, and Peru.

We've added a few of these photos later in the newsletter. We would love to hear your comments on unusual junk that you've seen or heard of.

So, on our facebook page, we've also added a photo or two about this subject today. To read or add comments, go to www.facebook.com/OdysseySeaGlass

Picturesque Junk - Exciting?

All of us would love to stumble on a totally-unknown beach that had been in years long past the site of a dump.

The possibilities for finding rare sea glass and pottery shards increase greatly on beaches that were once dump sites.

However, not all dumps are equal. The best (for us seaglassers) are the dumps containing lots of glass.

If we don't live in one of the few areas in the world where glass factories existed next to the ocean, then we hope for the next best - dumps where household trash was once tossed. Trash containing knicknacks, marbles, perfume bottles and other colored glass.

On the other hand, any signs of a dump of any sort is exciting to see on a beach we are exploring for the first time. The most visible old dump sites are old factory dumps containing parts of large heavy machinery.

Although perhaps not the best of dumps, these commercial dumps do present scenic (in a stark modern sense) panoramas.

Here are a few that we have found through friends or our own explorations:

This is a beautiful beach

Well not really too picturesque but it's the only photo I could dig up of this commercial dump.
However, the finds there are exciting, see next photo.

We would like to add that even though these beaches were not primarily household dumps, all of them have decent amounts of sea glass.
