Beach glass
(also known as mermaid's tears, sea
gems, and many other names) is glass found on beaches along
that has been
- tumbled and smoothed
by the water and sand,
- creating small pieces of smooth, frosted glass.
When found on salt
water shores, beach glass is called sea
glass.
This product, beach or sea glass, is one of the very
few cases of a valuable item being created from the actions of the
natural environment on man-made litter.
It is ecologically friendly and totally recycled.
What
is the Fascination in Collecting Beach Glass as a Hobby?
Like gathering shells
or stones, collecting sea glass is a hobby among beach-goers
and beachcombers, and many enjoy filling decorative jars or making
jewelry from their finds (see
the seaglass crafts projects pages).
Hobbyists both enjoy
searching for and collecting sea glass, as well as identifying its
historical origins. Some are excited to find that they can use their
beach finds in creative ways as crafts or jewelry.
Where
can Beach or Sea Glass be found?
Sea glass can be
found all over the world.
In fact, there is a chance of
finding sea glass on any beach in the world that is exposed to wave
action; however, many beaches may produce an extremely small amount.
For
a detailed explanation of how to identify a good beach for beach glass,
go to Find
Sea Glass.
There may be an
excellent beach for finding mermaid's tears (sea glass) in
your area or perhaps in an area that you will be visiting.
For a complete
list of specific
beaches in your area or anywhere in the world where sea glass has been
found, please see Where
to Find Sea Glass.

When Should I Look for Beach Glass?
Some say that the
best times to look are during very low tides.
However, the
sea bottom exposed at very low tides does not get the amount
of wave action that occurs between the average low/high tide lines and
so is likely to be less tumbled.
Since each tide uncovers a new sublayer of sand,
each change of tide brings something different to the surface.
A storm
may uncover pieces of glass that have lain buried for many years,
whereas very light wave action may only affect a few feet of the top
sand or rocks.
