Black glass with a distinct blue color

by Crystal
(Outer Banks, NC USA )

Hello-

I am a sea glass collector and most of my finds have been along the shore line of the Outer Banks in NC and the river banks of Virginia.

Today, I feel I found something remarkable - it's a black piece (dark green), sizable, but looking at it, it has a bluish tent. I thought it was a piece of plastic due to the color until i picked it up and held it up to the sun - it's dark green.

I'm wondering what the blue tent to it could be. It is obviously very old - it's a very rare find. I would really like to know what the blue is from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will take a photo and send it tomorrow. I am in need of a usb to connect my camera and will have that tomorrow.

Thanks!

Crystal

blue color on black bottles

On black glass bottoms, the blue color is from where the rod was inserted, I believe it is called a pontil mark. very old

I found a piece like that on the Chesapeake Bay, is your piece really porous? When I picked it up, I thought it was plastic too.

I didn't really check it out until later that day when the piece was dry.

I'll try to get a good picture but my camera sometimes has a bit of an attitude problem :)

Just a guess

Hi Crystal -

My guess is that the blue color is coming from the iron that was used during that era in the making of black glass. Let me ask you . . . is the piece bigger than most other pieces you have found? The iron "preserves" the glass if you will and usually the black pieces are larger in nature.

I believe the era for black glass dates back to 1880 - that's when they stopped making it (or there abouts).

This sounds like a lovely piece . . . . post that picture when you have a chance.

Great find . . . . continued success with your finds.

A friend in the hunt,
