Hi, I have found what I thought was black sea glass but holding up to the sun it's deep green... was wondering if you know what sort of age I'm looking at for the glass.. it's not suitable for jewelery just old bottles by the looks but I like them...

black glass by: Pam Hall
Hi, You are indeed lucky to find black sea glass. According to Pure Sea Glass by Richard LaMotte, the odds of finding black glass is one in every 2,500 pieces.
It says that it can be as old as the 1700s to the late 1800s and made "for beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages".
It also states that the producers of the glass put iron slag which gave it a green color in light and made the glass strong, therefore, much of what is found is in "large, chunky pieces rather than petite and rounded".
Is this what you found and where in England did you find it? As England has a long history compared to the USA, I would think glass that old would not be unheard of, but still a very exciting find!!
