General Sea Glass Question

by Dan
(Boston, Ma US)

I'm wondering what others think of pieces that have words and designs on them. Does this make them more or less collectible?

I've been collecting sea glass and patterned pottery for years, having lived on and near the beaches of New England all my life. Although I always say I have more than enough, I still can't resist picking it up when I come across a piece.

Until recently, I didn't realize that there were people so into this hobby and that there were experts on it. I always just picked up what attracted me without regard to the rarity of the pieces.

Mostly I have the easy to find dark greens, browns and whites.

I also have quite a few that have the remnants of a design or text on them. One white piece has the full word Ketchup on it, others have numbers, the word Quart, partial product names, a frosty pink piece that has a ridged/scalloped design, entire bottoms of bottles that are large and round with text still on them and a few cobalt pieces and a couple of very small reds.

Many of the designs in some of them look like they may have been pieces of decorative vases or table glassware.

Yup, ketchup

Yes, it's the entire word. I have quite a few pieces that have whole or partial words on them.

I don't make jewelry out of them. I use them in bowls, jars and my aquarium for decoration. So those with words on them are more interesting to me. It gives me a sort of sense of history of what it once was.

The pottery is pretty easy to find because so many of the seaside communities in NE have been around for so long and were once resort areas with hotels and restaurants. I think a lot of broken glasswear got tossed into the ocean.

Ketchup?

The whole word ketchup? That is so cool! I like the words or partial words and personally like that better as a design in a dish of sea glass, but obviously as a jewelry piece, no words.

I know what you mean about thinking about not needing another piece of sea glass... but I have so few pottery pieces, I am jealous. New England must have lots of pottery pieces because of the great potters up there!
