Grand Manan Sea Glass Beaches?

by Louiselle Benoit Hall
(Val Comeau, NB)

Second wedding anniversary!

We're heading toward Grand Manan Island for our second wedding anniversary July 18th.

We saw on your site that just as soon as you get out of the ferry behind the hotel there's seaglass.

Do you know if there's other places on the Island where there would be some???
We love traveling and also collecting pieces of seaglass we can spend hours at the beach walking and we love it more and more.

So if you have any good places for us near Grand Manan Island could you please let us know!

P.S. I am French so maybe there's a couples of errors in my e-mail, sorry for that!

Hi Louiselle,

It sounds like you will have a great time!

Personally, Lin and I haven't had the opportunity to visit the excellent New Brunswick sea glass area that includes Grand Manan.

The report and comment that Melanie Smith submitted give some good information about Grand Manan. See Sea Glass Grand Manan, New Brunswick.

Melanie recommended the Surfside Motel (inn) on Grand Manan, which is also highly recommended by other visitors.

Looking at the map below gives us some clues as to where to look.

The southern end of the island would be the most likely place for good tumbled and frosted sea glass, as that end of the island has an exposure to open ocean swells from the south and southwest.

From Deep Cove south along route 776, is where I would recommend looking first. I don't know how much access to the ocean shore there is along that stretch, but I do hope we get some reports from you (and some photos of sea glass, the scenery, and you folks).

To the east, Grand Manan is sheltered from waves by Nova Scotia.

The western side of the island (toward the mainland, where the ferry lands, is more protected from wave action, so the quality of sea glass is likely to be less rounded and frosted.

The northeast end of the island is exposed to a good long stretch of water. Northeast winds would kick up some pretty consistent waves to tumble the glass on that end, so that would be your second best area to check.

An interesting side trip would be the short ferry trip from Ingalls Head to White Head. After leaving the ferry it is about a mile to the south side of Ingalls Head and the shore that faces the favorable south. If there are any old settlements there, that would prove to be a good possibility for sea glass.

Lin and I wish we could go with you, as we love exploring new areas for sea glass. Even if there you don't find a lot, your report will add to the knowledge base and guide for others. But remember...there is always sea glass on a beach...it's just trying to find it that might be difficult!

Happy hunting,

David and Lin
