Gray Glass question

by Rebecca Johnson
(Hunter, NY USA)

Hi,

I hunt for what is usually called river glass, although I live in a very rural area in the Northern Catskill Mts. of NY, and I find my glass in the local streams. Therefore I call it "creek glass".

I have found some really beautiful pieces, including one very large piece of very thick, translucent light grey-colored glass.

I know the possible origin of a lot of the glass that I find, but I'm not sure about grey glass. I would appreciate any feedback..Thanx!

This is an interesting question in that gray glass is/was produced intentionally or could be a result of ultraviolet effects on the composition of the glass.

My guess, though, since it is thick, is that it was glass from a vase or other piece produced by the Consolidated Glass Company between 1928 and 1963.

All in all, a gray chunk is an uncommon find!

Hi,

I also read somewhere that gray glass was used to produce whiskey bottles of the 18th cent. and possibly even earlier. since the gray glass that I have found is so weathered and smooth, I suspect it is pretty old. All of the pieces that I have are also very thick.

I appreciate the feedback above and would be very interested to hear any other comments. Thanx!! ..Rebecca Johnson (Ricci)

Gray Creek Glass
by: Patricia M. Daly

Hi there! I, too, have found chunks of thick gray glass in upstate New York creeks. They are beautifully weathered because of time and the action of the water and the rocks.

I am glad David posted a possible provenance of the thick gray creek glass, because I have not had a clue from where these thick gray chunks came.

Sometimes they are so thick that they remind me of glass used in old plate glass mirrors or in glass tables from the 1970s and 1980s.

And I'm glad you are enjoying creeking in New York State's beautiful streams. It's a true pleasure, and you never know what you will find. I once found a meteorite in a New York State creek!
