How common is it to find aluminum ore at Lake Erie?

by Diane
(Palmyra, PA, USA)

My family and I recently spent a week at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. It was our first time to Lake Erie, and our first time collecting beach glass. While searching for beach glass, I found a "metal rock", which someone later told me is aluminum ore. Does anyone know much about these "rocks"? Are they common to find, and from where does the aluminum come? Thanks so much!

I find that aluminum ore in all shapes and sizes all the time at Lake Erie in Lake and Ashtabula county.

Not sure where it originates from. Would also like to find that out.

I have found some in the Caribbean, they literally look like chewed up pieces of metal gum. Don't know much about their origins or frequency.
