How To Keep Sea Glass From Chipping?
by Rena
I'm a new subscriber to your newsletter and I love it! I just started collecting sea glass in Oceanside, CA and I already have a nice collection of pale turquoise, green and brown. I would like to to make some earrings and pendants using the twisted silver wire technique I saw in your articles. Do you recommend coating the glass with something to keep if from chipping or cracking? It would have to be safe for skin contact. I would love to visit Washington after reading your articles. What is the best place and time of year in your opinion? I love going out in cold and stormy weather (mostly at low tide) so that is not an issue for me. Thanks for any info and thanks for your newsletter! Hey Rena, So glad you like the newsletters and site. I used to live in not far from you in Solana Beach many years ago, before I knew about sea glass. Sounds like you've got a good collection started. I wire wrap my jewelry and have never done anything to the glass. I have found it's not really needed. Anything you would apply to the glass would, with time, eventually wear off. Sometimes, however, I will put a drop of lavender oil on a piece I've made for myself to bring out the color instead of the frost. That can always be gently washed off with warm water and soap. I have rarely chipped sea glass when working on it. I do have to admit that I have busted a few pieces way back when because I exerted too much pressure. I now know better. But I've never heard of anyone else using a coating to wire wrap it. Visiting Washington, personally I like September best here. It's after the tourist rush and the weather is still very enjoyable. Can't guarantee sunny days if you do come but that month is probably your best bet; however, that's my humble opinion. Since you're a subscriber to the newsletter, David wrote an article on a trip to a special beach we took back in April on our sea glass hunting adventure. The link to that article is in the newsletter. You could try that spot or try our favorite haunts (simply because they're closer) of West Beach on Whidbey Island or Rosario Beach on Fidalgo Island. Shoot, if you like cold stormy weather, you should be living up here and not down in sunny Oceanside ;-) Stay in touch. Lin Schneider
