Howl long to age of a piece of sea glass?

How long does it take for a sharp piece of glass to be tumbled and frosted thus becoming sea glass?

____________

How long does it take for glass to become sea glass depends on a lot of factors.

Basically, lots of waves and a rocky shore will produce good sea glass in as little as a couple of years theoretically.

On the other hand, if there are hardly any waves and there is a sandy shore where the glass is lying, it may take 100 years...or never for the glass to become tumbled and frosted.

Someone might want to comment on other factors that age the glass.

River Glass
by: Pookie

I have a ton of glass that has been picked off the banks of the Delaware River in NJ and PA. Some of it has the partial words from Milk of Magnesia on them, so I know they are pretty old. They do not have the frosted look of sea glass, but the colors are gorgeous. Many are full bottle bottoms from coke bottles. Again, these are very worn and smooth, but not frosted. So, it just depends on what type of "waves" or how fast the water moves for the glass to be DONE!!!

Aging

pH will also affect the glass.

Basic water will frost the glass further by leaching minerals from the glass crystal structure, but acidic water will give the glass an "oil-slick" finish.

For example, California beach glass from Malibu is frosted and "icy" looking, but glass from Maui Hawaii that has been trapped under volcanic pebbles and such has an acid-caused sheen, due to the acidic soil and water conditions.
