Is this beach a hidden gem?

by ollie
(wales, uk)

Hi all!

I hope you can help me.

I only heard about sea glass last week by accident and went out looking immediately! I walked for 5 hours and didn't find one little bit!

The next day I tried another beach near a harbour and after rounding a corner I had to walk over some rocks to get to a sandy cove. The rocks are from house brick size down to sand particles.

Anyway...upon glancing down I saw my first bit of sea glass! To cut a long story short after 2 hours I had to go home because my rucksack was nearly full.

I have been twice in the last two days again and in an hour I can get 300 to 400 pieces of small medium and large lovely sea glass.

I have found 4 glass bottle stops this morning and I have managed to find out the age of some of the glass by phoning a brewery local to me whose name is on some of the glass.

They have informed me they started in 1876 and stopped using glass in 1936!

The brewery is next to a river which leads to an estuary and then the beach.

I have red glass, pink glass , glass with wire in it (would love to know what that is!) Green glass, brown glass, all soorts of blue and yellows.

Anyway I'm wondering if i have stumbled upon an untapped treasure beach!

Most of the glass is thick, smooth and frosted, a lot have small chips from the rocks etc but a lot are lovely!

I have collected nearly 2000 pieces in 3 visits and there is just loads and loads more! Should I get as much as I can or leave it?

I don't want to say where the beach is but its somewhere in wales!

Thank you all for reading this!

Ollie

do you realize how selfish you sound? just keep taking tons and tons of glass, filling your little house up to the brim...as a child i enjoyed searching for glass with my parents. unfortunately, people like you and others who think they'll make their "millions" selling crappy jewelry online have taken all of the fun out of searching for glass...have fun with your carloads of glass...

I will get some photos done for you. I found another bottle stop yesterday and a marble but the marble doesn't have much colour.

I also found 3 pieces that look like they were once bottle stops but are now perfectly cylindrical.

I hoped I wasn't being selfish disclosing the location but as you say if everyone knows it will all go!

Myself and my partner are going further afield next week as its so addictive! Thanks for your comments.

Enjoy Your Find!
by: Patricia M. Daly

Hi, Ollie. I am so happy that you have located such a great spot for seaglass in Wales. Your finds sound so beautiful.

I make jewelry from seaglass, and often I use the large, thick, frosted pieces like those you describe, even though they are not considered gem quality. Treasure is in the eye of the beholder!

As for sharing the location of the beach, that's totally up to you, and whatever you decide is understandable. As the person from Washington state said, it's easy for a beach to be "de-glassed" by a rush of seaglassers.

Then, too, we must remember that the oceans and rivers and lakes are providing us seaglassers with these gems fortuitously, serendipitously, and graciously.

I think that part of the joy of seaglassing is hunting for good locations as well as for glass.

However, it's always nice to have pointers on places that provide good finds. Keep in mind, however, that even when a location is noted for good finds, you can go there and not find anything at all. (That happened to me on Dauphin Island, Alabama.)

Whether or not you decide to share the beach location, it would be great if you could post some pix of your finds! Thanks!

Where are the photos?
by: Pete

You speak of all this glass you have collected , the least you could do is show us some of it.

As far as how much you should collect, I would say it depends on whether you have a use for it or not. I suppose you *could* try to sell it, either on the web or to jeweler/hobbyists.

As to whether to disclose the location... we have a beach here in Washington state that had the reputation of being a "honey hole" for sea glass. Word was spread and now, the last two visits my wife and I found very little. Like over-fishing or clear-cutting a forest, what took years to develop can be gone in the blink of an eye. Just a thought.
