Sea Glass and Movies

by hoora

i heard once in a movie that glass beaches are formed after storms by lightning. is it true?

i mean it made sense but as i was reading it also made sense that by tumbling with waves and against the rocks of sea shore, it becomes soft and rounded from the edges just like rocks and stones..

thank you..

some glass is
by: Pete

Hoora, I remember reading a story once about a guy in South Carolina (or thereabout) would drive iron rods into the sand of a beach to attract lightning which would then melt the sand into "natural" glass sculptures.

He would excavate these and sell them. I have seen examples of glass formed this way and it seems to me to be a hard way to go to make a buck.

The glass formed by the lightning strike looks a lot like lightning in the sky, or a tree with a strong central trunk and then hair fine branches extending off to the sides. Digging these out without breaking would be like pulling a carrot without losing all the feeder roots.

If you want to know more, google "fulgurite glass"
but the glass this site is concerned with is a lot less exotic.
