"Cooked Sea Glass...?"

I was going through comments and submissions and reading the one on "What is another name for a sea glass collector?"

There were two good words there, "glass pipers," after the shore birds, and "going glassing," for hunting sea glass.

So I thought I would be interesting to hear what words you have come up with. Add them to the comments below.

Here are some that we use but can't remember where we heard them:

"Cooked." Refers to sea glass that is well frosted due to a long time in the surf. When the sea glass is too "raw," we throw it back to get "cooked" some more.

What is a good word or phrase for the action of bending down to check out an object on the beach?

What do you call the bag or pocket you put your glass in when collecting?

What do you say when you find a super piece on the beach? What do you call that piece, like "Wow, here's a ...."

We are looking forward to seeing this list of "sea glass tech" terms grow over a period of time. Add one now!

Nicknames

My son calls me a glassaholic. You'd have to see my collection of river glass and sea glass to understand. I think he wants me to start selling off so I can pay for his college education. LOL

Unripe when it has sharp edges, glass needs to ripen more in the sea. When it does it is ripe!

sea glass slang
by: David

Beach words:

Desert - beach has nothing but sand, sand, sand.

Boneyard - Area above the high water mark.

Well-populated - a significant amount of sea glass among the riff raff. ie, "found a lot in a short distance, really well-populated"

Sea glass words:

Too young - sharp and shiny. Ie, "what's it like?" "too young"

Immature - Looks like it's been around a long time but is not really cooked (or not grown up)

Injured - Otherwise good piece but has been broken off.

Dark Blue "Done?"
by: Maureen B.

When we get to the beach, we split up and start searching. Dark Blue is the favorite, so when someone finds a dark blue, they yell "Bingo" so we all know they found one!
As with any color, if it is not "done" then it gets tossed back into the water.

Funny

One of my favorite things about "going glassing" is when my boyfriend finds a green piece he starts singing the theme song from Green Acres. Cracks me up every time!

We also use the "cooked" terminology. If its still sharp, throw it back into the "pot" to get more cooked. If its already really cooked, you've found a keeper.

The bag that you put everything in is your "goody bag". When we get home, we dump our goodies onto a paper plate and swish them around to get the sand off and then inspect them under a bright light.

We love it! We'll eventually add a glossary of these seaglass technical terms...

Seaglass lingo
by: Linda

I have a friend on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas who referred to a piece of seaglass as not being "cured" yet.

Hey, we're off to a good start here! Thanks,
