She Sells Sea Glass - Hobart, Tasmania- Australia
by Debbie How
Background My interest in sea glass came about quite by accident and it's a long story, but I'm now addicted! I love the mystery that surrounds it. Each piece is unique, tactile and holds a piece of history. Where did it come from? Who owned or used the once whole glass item? How old is it? How far has it traveled?
These techniques have been refined and built on over the past 18 months and I continue to learn, the more I read about sea glass and jewellery making techniques. My finished products are not always perfect, but the very nature of sea glass evokes simplicity and my aim carry this through to the rings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and home wares that I create. I work with 100% recycled sterling and fine silver. I also have an old copper hot water cylinder that I am also recycling - a little bit at a time! Also at some stage in the future, I would like to divert some of my jewellery making attention to incorporating beautiful Tasmanian native woods into my jewellery. The rich honey colours of Tasmanian huon pine, the dark stripes of black heart sassifras, and the rich red colours of the myrtle all blend beautifully with sea glass colours. Services My new website is currently under construction. When complete, my site will offer the following:
The Sea Glass Most of the glass that I use comes from the North west coast beaches near Penguin and southern beaches along the Derwent River estuary. Because I know the history of the area, the glass can be dated to 60 - 70 years old. Gone are the days of strolling along the beach looking at the beautiful views. It's head down and aching back and picking up prized sea glass gems. To incorporate rarer colours, I also purchase sea glass from selected sellers in the United Kingdom and the USA. As sea glass collectors and artisans would be aware, the English sea glass from the Seaham district is very much prized and sought after, because of the multi colours and other brilliant single colours. While the 'multi's' are gorgeous, I mostly prefer to use single colour sea glass gems. I hope you enjoy my work and browsing at www.SheSellsSeaGlass.net Please use my "Contact Us" page to leave any comments or ask any questions.
