Tools for Finding Sea Glass

by Lisa Pugsley
(Corona, California, USA)

Hi, my name is Lisa and I have just discovered the beauty of sea glass. I have lived on the ocean, east and west coast all my life and never thought to collect it.

My question is, are there any tools that you use to dig or sift for sea glass?

Thanks and God bless

PS: Funny how God takes litter and turns it into something so beautiful!

Sea Glass Collection Tool
by: -Pete-

Mostly we find glass on top of the beach. We search as the tide is going out, which uncovers more all the time.

The only "tool" we use is a cottage cheese container with the lid securely duct taped on and an "X" cut in the lid. This allows us to push the glass pieces into the container but if you drop it you won't lose everything.

Can't claim credit for this idea, we saw it on Travel Channels Treasure Hunt show, but it works great.

Yes i use a scooper made of small chicken wire with a 5' pole on it so you can scoop up glass in the serf without getting beat by the waves. Then you can sift through what you want out of the water.

That sounds like a good idea, James. I'd like to see a photo if you get a chance.

No tool for hunting sea glass !
by: Toshi Kanno

Hi Lisa

Once in a while I see some people with one of those kids beach scoop but I would say "no" for that. Sea glass pieces are light weight,so when waves come in they float on the top and reach far away from the water's edge. You don't need to dig down into the pebbles or sand to find them. Just walk on the beach and a plastic bag in your hand, you are ready to find sea glass !
Good Luck Lisa !
