Toss the glass in the ocean? Dangerous Littering or Good Karma for Future Finder?

by Joy

Congrats and best wishes on your exciting move.

I'm new to the hobby and your site. In the past couple of weeks, I have heard two differing opinions about finding new glass.

The more romantic is that if you find an un-weathered/tumbled shard, you throw it back so that someone else (or you) will find the fully-cooked piece down the road. The other opinion is that new glass shards are a danger to beach walkers and should be thrown in the trash.

I see the point of both opinions, but as the weather cools and the winds pick up here on the Bay, there aren't that many hardy souls walking the shoreline.

Do seaglass collectors have an opionion on throwing back or throwing away? Thanks very much for your consideration.

Thanks for your response. I agree with you -- just common sense, I guess.

Toss 'em back
by: Pete Suchon

As an avid beachwalker and former backpacker I abhor finding plastic bags, bottles and those ring doo-dahs that hold six packs together and always carry a trash bag with me to pack out trash on the trail.

Having said all that, I must admit that I usually toss "unfinished" glass back into the surf for more seasoning. I don't toss back "raw" glass though. Freshly broken beer bottles fall under the heading of litter for me.

The way I decide which is which? If I wouldn't want to step on it I pick it up. Am I shorting future generations of the joys of sea glass hunting? Maybe, but I'm also protecting little feet from a savaging. Seems a wash to me.
Later.
