What is this Sea Creature?

Sea Creature's Unremarkable Appearance from Top

Lin found this while we were looking for sea glass today. We have never seen a creature like this one. It looks like a bottom dweller that sticks to the rocks.

It does not have a hard shell on top but more like tough leather. I'm sure some of you divers can tell us what it is. The photo above is the top and below is a photo of it turned over.

I found one,too !
by: Anonymous

The other day I found one just like this picture.

The lady was poking with her foot and was wondering what it is and I didn't know either, so we decided that it was from the outer space !

It didn't look neat, so we just kicked it back into the water and walked away.

It is...a Gumboot Chiton
by: David (editor)

Boy, Suz, you sure hit it right.

I finally got around to looking it up. Here's a photo and some info from Wikipedia:

Gumboot Chiton

The gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri, also known as the giant pacific chiton, is the largest of the chitons, growing to 33 cm (13 in). It is found along the shores of the northern Pacific Ocean from Central California to Alaska, across the Aleutian Islands to the Kamchatka Peninsula and south to Japan. It inhabits the lower intertidal and subtidal zones of rocky coastlines.

My Guess is...
by: suz

David and Lin,
I believe your sea creature is a chiton. I'm sure you have seen lovely bits of thier articulated "shells" while beach combing, they turn a blue green in color when they have been on the beach a while. I find them in all stages of decomposition on our beloved NW beaches.
LOVE YOUR SITE!

------------
Thanks Suz, I'm going to Google chitons now!
