What's worth keeping?

Does sea glass have to be rounded/polished with age to be "of value"? Or, do the gently "smoothed" pieces, some of which are discernable as the bottom of a beer bottle, count as collectible?

Thanks for your comment, Anon,

Each piece of sea glass can be special to the person who found it. If you like it, definitely keep it in your collection!

Thanks so much for your quick reply and thorough answer. My 3-year-old daughter and I just started our shell/glass collection two days ago on the Chesapeake Bay -- near Fort Story where the Bay and the ocean meet. I'm excited to continue and glad to have found your site. Best wishes.

It depends what you are going to use it for.

If it's mosiac stepping stones, for instance, then a few rough edges are ok because the edges will be sunk into concrete.

If you are using them for jewelry that you want to sell then they need to be the smoothest, roundest edges with gentle frosting all over the piece.

If you are making jewelry for yourself, use whatever you want because you are the artist!

Generally, however, the smoothed rounded edges with the completely frosted surfaces are the best.
