DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

For your sea glass and beach finds

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Display your beach finds on these driftwood and skewer shelves

HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Tools and Materials

1. Select your flattest driftwood. Set it on edge to get an idea of how you want to stagger the shelves.

2. The driftwood should be less than 1 inch thick and less than 14 inches long. Maximum width should be about 4 inches.

  • Here, I will be using 5 shelves.
  • I highly recommend using just 3 shelves for your first project.
3. The glue is any wood glue. Here, I'm using a white glue like Elmer's Glue-All.

4. Any drill should work fine.

5. The bamboo skewers are the type used for shish kabob.

6. Important - You will need to get the bamboo skewers first and then a drill bit that is the size of the thickest skewer.

Steps 1 - 5 Arrange and rearrange your shelves against a white background until you find the design that fits best.
  • Using the flat driftwood and the bamboo skewers (shish kabob), the photo above is what I decided I wanted to build.

Fig. 6 - Drilling the first hole

Since you will be drilling through and beyond the wood, use an old table or place a used board beneath you work area.
  • I have covered an old board with white paper to make things easier to see.
Stack your driftwood and stagger it according to your plan.

Make sure that the back edges (that will go against the wall) are level with each other.
  • Note: I have left out the shortest shelf piece for the moment.
Drill your first hole about 3/8 inch from the back of the shelf and 3/8 inch in from the end of the shortest piece.

Fig. 7

Break a skewer into several pieces about 4 inches in length. Insert one of the pieces in the hole that you have drilled as shown above.
  • This serves to hold the shelves in place while you drill the second hole.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 8

Drill the second hole as shown. Make sure that the drill goes through all the shelves.

Again, put a piece of skewer through the second hole to hold everything in place.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 9

Drill the rest of the holes. Each shelf should have at least 3 holes for the skewers to pass through; at least one hole on the front and back (wall side) of each piece.
  • In the above photo, you see that I have added the very short shelf.

Fig. 10

Here is another view of the stacked shelves with most of the holes drilled.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 11

Replace the short skewer pieces with full length skewers.

Using squared blocks of wood to hold the shelves apart in the desired position to get ready to glue.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 12

Here is the shelving with most of the skewers in place and temporary blocks to hold things straight.

There will be ends of skewers extending beyond the top and bottom shelf. That's fine, we'll deal with those in the final steps.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 13

Push each skewer about 1/2 inch beyond it's final position. Apply glue to the extended part and then pulling the skewer back to it's final position.

Make sure that there is glue on the portion of skewer that will slide into each shelf when in it's final position.

Twist the skewer as you do this so that the glue coats the skewer evenly in the hole.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 15

The shelves are held in position while the glue sets. Allow 4 hours for the glue to dry somewhat before going on to the next step.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 16

Using heavy scissors, a wire cutter, or a sharp knife, cut off the unwanted ends of the skewers.

Remove the blocks that have held your shelves in place.

DIY Driftwood Display Shelves

Fig. 17

Hang your finished shelves.
  • Compare this to my original plan and you will see that I turned the whole thing upside down - I decided I wanted a longer shelf on the top to display the coral and starfish.
To hang this  project, I used double-sided tape on the backs of 3 of the shelves and pressed them very firmly to the wall.

You might want to use a more permanent mounting, as time, heat, and moisture can loosen the adhesive and cause you some grief.

Now that you're done, sit back and enjoy your driftwood shelves and...

Happy Hunting!
