your Odyssey Sea Glass News #051 - "We're on vacation..."
June 11, 2011
Hi,

Lin_and_David
Make your hobby your business.
We did!

♫ We're on vacation...in the summertime! ♫

sung by Connie Frances circa 1965.

Well, it’s that time of year again; school is out, vacation, sun and warmth, and best of all, some sea glass hunting. Hope all have a great time this summer. We’re gearing up for the “wintertime” here.

Caution: Rolling Logs

If you happen to be vacationing on the East or especially West Coast in areas of drifwood, please keep in mind the dangers of beached or submerged logs. They can kill or maim.

I'm including this in the newsletter since we do have so many viewers on the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and Northern California who might be affected as well as you visitors!

There was recently an incident in Oregon of a little girl playing on a large driftwood log on the beach just above the waterline. A wave came and the log, which weighed several tons and appeared too heavy to ever move, rolled on top of her.

Fortunately, the little girl is alive. However, she is dealing with severe and perhaps permanent injuries from the accident.

Those driftwood logs look very tempting to climb on, BUT... please use good judgment.

The Hunt for Red October...or is it Red June...or Red Sea Glass?

The sea glass hunting hasn’t been happening here in Los Organos, Peru. Boo Hoo :-(

The last time down at the beach there was more sand than we’ve ever seen on the point at Punta Veleros, our local best spot. In fact, we’ve never seen so many of the rocks covered before. It has been a very strange year here for sea glass, just too, too much sand.

Happening? Hmmm...

Well, even though there wasn’t much happening here in Peru sea glass wise, we did see some interesting things at the beach.

cobalt sea glass and ceramic shard beach mancora

Our crazy egret was back fishing. Looked like he was trying to figure out what they were doing ;-)

And we saw another one of those weird fish that we found a while back

strange fish on beach organos
(This is the old picture, David didn't want to take another one since this fish had no eyeballs left!)

David took a trip to Mancora a few weeks back and took a walk on the beach. He came home with a really nice large piece of cobalt sea glass and a nice piece of ceramic.

strange fish on beach organos

Hopefully one of these days we can make it back north of here to Punta Sal for sea glass. Although there are never handfuls of sea glass there, the colors are always unusual and the glass is well "cooked."

We know you’re all busy so we’ll keep this newsletter short. Have fun and stay happy!

And the Winner is...May 2011 Sea Glass Photo Contest

"Blue Bliss" by Raymunda Fox of Monterey, California wins the May 2011 Sea Glass Photo Contest.

There were a number of excellent submissions this month, all of which deserve a look from everyone.

But "Blue Bliss" by far received the most votes. And I must say, the choice of sea glass, the clarity, and the lighting were excellent.

Congratulations, Raymunda.

And to all the runnerups, today is the first day of the June 2011 Sea Glass Photo Contest.

Now's a chance to get a really early start with another your excellent photos!

We hope to see a bunch of really good photos again this month.
