My first fishing float!

My first fishing float

My first fishing float

My mom and I went out to Lake Ozette on Saturday and walked the boardwalk trail to the ocean (3 miles).

There wasn't a ton of sea glass there (very sandy beach, not many rocks) so I ended up near the driftwood, checking to see what might have gotten trapped up there.

I found this float just laying out in the sun, behind a bunch of driftwood... a bright green wine bottle nearby caught my eye and the float was just a few inches away.

Hey Dave, its Harley aka Michelle
by: Anonymous

This is pretty late in the year to find much of anything on the hook. In fact, we haven't been out there for a couple of months, choosing instead to hit Port Townsend's North Beach or our 2nd favorite as of late, a secret spot west of Port Angeles.

We are waiting for the Elwha Dams to be removed to see what changes they create out on the hook. Maybe it will stir up some more good stuff. Since the hook is so accessible, all the newbies go hunting for glass out there. It is so picked over! However, if I was going out there, I would park by the paper mill (we call it "the tank farm" at the eastern edge of the mill) and climb over the rocks to the North side of the hook. You can actually find some decent stuff at low tide by walking west/south in front of the mill and towards the old dump site. There's a good stretch once you clear the mill. There's a little "stream" to jump, created by an overflow pipe from the mill. Beyond that I have found jewelry grade pieces, and marbles.

I just got married on 9/10/11. My husband enjoys "glassing" as much as I do, although he sometimes does some surf fishing as well. We're planning an extended honeymoon to Kauai next year. We heard there's a really good glass beach there. I guess there's glass all over the Hawaiian Islands, but Kauai is less populated than the others, and that's just the way we like it!

Hey, see you on the beach...

------------

Congrats on the marriage; as you know, marriage to a non-seaglasser ends in serious problems. On the other hand, marriage to a seaglasser results in delight!

Hi Harley re Ediz Hook
by: David @ Odyssey

Lin and I went to Ediz Hook for the first (sea glass hunting) time a few weeks ago but found only a few unremarkable pieces.

Where on the hook do you recommend looking? We were about 1/4 of a mile from the end on the ocean side and walked mostly back toward land.

Thanks and hope to run into while we are here in Sequim/PA/PT area!

There always seems to be quite a few cars at the Ozette trail head but I've never seen very many people on the trails or beach. Since there are 2 different trails you can take, plus the beach trail if you do "the loop", it scatters the people up pretty good.

If I was going to camp with kids out there, I would probably camp by the lake and just day trip out to the ocean. There are campsites at the ocean, but of course no facilities. At least by the lake they have flush toilets. Whatever you decide, its an amazing place and I highly recommend it!

Nice fishing float!

In reply to "glass beach"...I believe it is the same near Port Townsend that you are referring to. My husband, kids and I love going there...only once have we made it ALL the way to the part of the beach we always want to get to. It's quite a story too...our 2, 5 and 7 year old kids made the 8 mile round trip quite "interesting"!

Nice fishing float!! How exciting!! In high school, I walked the Lake Ozette boardwalk and camped on the beach, and I've always wanted to return for another camping trip with my family. It seemed little traveled at that time, what is it like these days?

If you strike out at North Beach/McCurdy Point looking for a marble (I haven't found one there but I know many people who have, including a gal who found one when I was with her there!), you might try Ediz Hook in Port Angeles. I've found over 50 marbles there in the last 4 years or so. And if you get really desperate and don't find one at either place, maybe I can help you out with one of mine.

I wouldn't want Dad to go without a Father's Day marble.. although the story would be best if you found it yourself! E-mail me directly if you'd like, michelle@poeinc.com.

Wonderful!

Wow, that is a great find! I have never seen anything like it before.

I tried to get to Mccurdy Point the other day, ended up going in circles for a few hours, hiked through the woods a bunch...and then finally found North Beach(didn't realize I was looking for North Beach, thought I had to go to the actual Mccurdy Point)when it was too late to walk to "sea glass rock" :( I hope to find at least one beached marble to send to my Dad for Father's Day... He collects antique marbles.

So, I think I'll make another trip out there tomorrow, since I know now where it is and will give my self plenty of time to search.

Again, that fishing float is just amazing!!!!

Nice find Harley.

My wife found a float like that one when she was a little girl, we still have it displayed on the curio shelf. She keeps looking for another one but I think they are becoming rare.
