"Trinidad & Tobago" Top Beaches of the World - What is the Definition of a Beach?A beach is usually made up of loose particles which are often composed of rock, such as sand, gravel, pebbles, small rounded rocks. Some beaches in tropical areas are made almost entirely of broken down coral or shells, thus having biological origins. Top Beaches of the World - Is it a Beach or a Shore?A beach is a specific area usually with a definite beginning and ending area. In many cases it is enclosed on both ends with a rocky outcropping. It is usually a fairly wide and level area that is covered at certain times of the year or every number of years by water and clearly marks a wide border between the water and the start of vegetation growth. On the other hand, a shore can include sandy areas, rocky areas and cliffs, or heavy vegetation. Plants such as reeds or mangroves might grow right into the water. A shore does not necessarily have any starting or ending point. An island shore, for example, would encompass the whole island, encircling it. It could, however, include many beaches defined by starting and ending points. Top Beaches of the World - Naming The Parts of the BeachBeach bermThe part mostly above water (depending upon tide), and more or less actively influenced by the waves at some point in the tide, is termed the beach berm. The berm is the deposit of material that makes up the active shoreline. The berm has a crest (top) and a face — the face being the slope leading down towards the water from the crest. At the very bottom of the face, there may be a trough, and further seaward one or more longshore bars: slightly raised, underwater "hills" formed where the waves first start to break. Top Beaches of the World - Sand depositThe sand deposit may extend well inland from the berm crest, where there may be evidence of one or more older crests (the storm beach) resulting from very large storm waves and beyond the influence of the normal waves. At some point the influence of the waves (even storm waves) on the material making up the actual beach stops, and, if the particles are small enough (sand size or smaller), the wind begins to shape the sand. When the wind blows the sand particles beyond the berm of the beach itself and they begin to pile up, they form dunes. Dunes are not the actual beach. Top Beaches of the World - Beach profileThese features make up what is called the beach profile. The beach profile changes during the course of the year due to the change in wave action during calm and storm seasons. The beach profile is higher during the summer or calmer season because of the gentler wave action during this season.
