Sea glass collecting is an amazing hobby – we get fresh air, a little exercise, and some beautiful treasures for our collections or art projects. But like anything, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Recently, a conversation popped up that really gets to the heart of the matter.
Catlyn pointed out that sharing the exact locations of certain beaches online has led to over-collecting. Her local beach is even a marine sanctuary and she says the glass is nearly gone because people show up with shovels, rakes, and buckets. She feels this hobby has, in some cases, damaged a precious resource.

Ash agrees that filling up buckets from a protected area is wrong – and in places like Fort Bragg you can even get fined for it. But she points out that the real reason sea glass is disappearing is the switch from glass to plastic packaging. In countries where glass bottles are still common, like Italy and the UK, sea glass is still plentiful.
Her advice? Collect responsibly – take a few pieces, follow local rules, and avoid protected spots. And if you care about your beaches, volunteer for cleanups, donate to conservation groups, and help spread awareness.

If you love collecting, here’s how to do it without harming the beaches we all cherish:
This hobby should be relaxing, inspiring, and good for the soul. If we collect with care, follow the rules, and give back to the beaches we love, there’s no reason we can’t enjoy sea glass hunting for many more years to come. For more tips and inspiration, check out our Sea Glass Articles section.
