Manganese purple
by: Liam

It is probably manganese purple.

It dates from 1860s to 1915 when it was used in clear glass. Then the sun makes it purple.

Purple Heart

The piece I found looked like a black piece of glass. I didn't realize it was purple until i held it up to the sun.

Niiice!
by: Pam

That is a beauty! Is is black when not held up to the sun?

Black sea glass is rare according to Pure Sea Glass by Richard LaMotte.

It is old and found maybe once in every 2,500 pieces found.

I saw a piece of black glass in Hawaii. A collector found and it was purple when held up to the sun.

If it is purple when not held up to the sun, the book says that it is found one for every 200 to 300 found.

What a great find!
