Black Glass found near Scottish Loch

by Robert Strzelecki
(Perth, Western Australia)

Hello,
my partner and I travelled to Scotland this year and while walking the banks of Loch Assynt near the ruins of Calder House we came across a number of worn black glass fragments with wonderful brightly coloured remnants of strange patterns.

some fragments showed impressed patterns as if the base of a container. Others looked like brightly decorated rims.

Does anyone have any ideas what these might be from?

This has solved a mystery for me, too! I've found nearly identical pieces on a beach near me. And I was here on the site looking for something else!

Glass fragments from skeet disks

Hi Robert,

What you have found are likely clay targets (pidgeons) from skeet shooting on the beach.
