North Beach and Glass Beach near Port Townsend, WA

My daughter and her 5 and 8 year old walked the three miles from North Beach Park to McCurdy Point with me and then started looking when we got to Glass Beach.

This was the end of March 2016.

We found mostly tiny pieces. Somewhat disappointed.

The larger pieces we found were few and far between and under an inch. Most of the larger ones we found on the walk back.

My daughter found 3 tiny red pieces.

Most glass was rounded and frosted. We threw a couple sharp ones back in the ocean.

I was picking up all sizes and probably bent over 400 times, while my daughter was more discerning and would only pick up larger pieces after awhile.

Her finds were larger overall, but I had more volume.

Found some pottery pieces and other interesting bits. Not much to be found around North Beach Park.

We arrived an hour after high tide then returned as the tide was coming back in.

Tips for Hiking the Beach

  • Wear good walking shoes or hiking boots. Cowboy boots kill your feet!!

  • Don't walk near the cliffs but stay near the water. We heard a loud noise and found on our return walk that a large chunk of the cliff we had walked by came down.

I was up there last week and it was okay but slim pickins compared to what it used to be. Going to head up there this weekend & hope to have some better finds.

Also, there have been a lot of land slides up there; one came down right next to us while we were sitting on a fallen tree eating lunch. Haven't moved that fast in a long time!!

Thanks so much for this current report! So many of us go to the beach and then forget to take pictures and let others know what to expect.

I'm sure lots of others will appreciate this report - and we ourselves hope to be back to North Beach / McGurdy Point / Glass Beach later this year.
